We all have those inspiring moments in our lives when we sit back and reflect on the goodness of the world, how lucky we are to be part of it and the bright future that lies ahead. Well, I was fortunate to have one of those moments this past week.
On Saturday, I attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Benjamin Meck. Ben is a sixteen year old student and part of Boy Scout Troop 7155. He volunteered countless number of hours for Crossing the Finish Line. This volunteer work, coupled with an array of other activities that involved learning life skills - doing good "turns" for those in need, taking steps to protect our fragile environment, demonstrating appreciation for other cultures, enhancing personal responsibility...the list can go on and on as to the requirements of Eagle Scout...earned Ben this recognition.
Now I'm sure that we have all seen the pictures of an Eagle Scout with our local political figure appearing in newspapers - but did we ever stop to pause and understand the depth of this honor? We are building our leaders of tomorrow to serve, to listen with empathy, to console, to LEAD even when the mountains ahead seem impassable.
I walked away from this ceremony refreshed and rejuvenated in my mind and heart. I watched Veterans present an accolade to him - Veterans themselves that were once Eagle Scouts before the love of their country called them to duty. To witness the juxtaposition of the young Eagle Scout and the retired Veteran gave me a tremendous amount of pride to be an American!
I walked away not only grateful for the work that Ben did for CFL (that is revamping and organizing our entire inventory system, including building storage shelves) but grateful for the gift he gave to me - the fine appreciation for what it means to serve others and our country, especially when adversity seems insurmountable Thank you Ben, his Mom and Dad (proud parents on this special day), his brother Josh, his fellow Scouts and the Veterans of Kline-Styer-McCann VFW Post 7155 in Trappe, PA for making me proud to be an American. No mountain is too tall for us to climb together!
